Tooth gem FAQ

What is a tooth gem?

A semi-permanent, non-invasive way to add sparkle to your smile. Gems are bonded to the surface of your tooth. No drilling and nothing is removed from the tooth.

Does the application hurt?

Not at all. The process is quick, safe and easy, with no drilling required.

Will I feel the gem in my mouth?

Yes, you'll notice something new on your tooth at first, but most people get used to the feeling within a few days.

How long will my gems last?

Anywhere from one month to a year or more. It depends on your saliva, diet, at-home care, and the size and placement of the gem. If a gem falls off within 30 days and the aftercare was followed, Tia offers one free reapplication.

Is the bonding agent safe for my teeth?

Yes. It's a dental-grade adhesive, the same kind used to apply traditional braces.

Will the gem harm my tooth?

No, it's perfectly safe for your natural tooth.

What are Swarovski crystals?

Genuine Swarovski crystals are lead free, stain resistant and non-toxic. They contain no plastics or acrylics and are safe for oral use.

What if the gem falls off and I swallow it?

Don't worry. The gems are lead free and non-toxic.

Can I get a gem on a crown or veneer?

No. Tooth gems can't be applied to artificial surfaces like crowns, caps, veneers or dentures.

Can I wear a tooth gem with a retainer?

Gems aren't recommended if you wear a clear plastic retainer (Invisalign, SmileDirect) since it won't fit over the gem. If you wear a wire retainer, bring it to your appointment.

Can I still brush normally?

Don't brush directly over the gem for the first 24 hours. After that, brush gently around it to avoid any build-up. A soft-bristle brush is best.

Can I still get my teeth cleaned?

Yes, your dentist or hygienist can simply clean around the gem.

How do I remove it when I'm done?

Gems are meant to fall off naturally. Tia doesn't offer removal, but your dentist or dental hygienist can remove one safely at any time.

Do you have gold gems in stock?

18K gold pieces are made to order. Pre-order 1 to 2 weeks ahead with a deposit. Swarovski crystals and opals are always in stock.

Keep it sparkling

Tooth gem aftercare

Proper care keeps your gem secure, shiny and beautiful for as long as possible.

Before your appointment

First 2 hours

  • Only drink water. No food.

First 48 hours (curing)

  • Brush gently around the gem, not directly on it.
  • Avoid hard, sticky or chewy foods: candy, gum, tough meats, crusty bread.
  • Go easy on soda, citrus juice, sports drinks, hot drinks and alcohol.
  • Avoid smoking or vaping as much as possible.

General care

  • Don't pick at or play with your gem.
  • Keep teeth clean to prevent plaque around the gem. A soft-bristle brush is better than an electric one.
  • Skip charcoal toothpaste and oil pulling. They can wear down the bond over time.

Longevity & removal

  • Most gems last 3 to 12 months depending on diet, saliva, hygiene, size and placement.
  • Falls off within 30 days with proper aftercare? One free reapplication.
  • For safe removal, visit a dental clinic.
